To enjoy life.
To be worthy.
To have permission.
You don’t have to lift the heaviest weight
at the gym.
You don’t have to be the fastest runner
on the track.
You don’t have to be the richest guest
in the hotel.
You don’t have to be the most
accomplished scientist, artist,
writer, actor in the field.
You don’t have to attain
the highest grade in the course.
You don’t have to look the prettiest, or
be the strongest, the smartest, the tallest,
You probably do want to be those things –
Why wouldn’t you?
But you don’t have to.
You have a place.
In the gym.
On the track.
In the school.
In the office.
At the beach.
In the world.
Don’t ever feel inadequate for not being
The best doesn’t exist anyway;
It’s subjective. It’s cultural.
It’s seasonal. It’s transient.
There will always be someone better;
times change, trends change.
No one will ever really be the best.
Don’t be seduced by that moving target.
Perfection is a lethal trap.
You don’t have to cover your body
because someone else’s outer shell is different to yours,
and you think that makes them more beautiful.
You don’t have to give up floor space
for someone who lifts heavier weights.
at the back table of the restaurant
so that someone who is wealthier
can enjoy the water views.
You don’t have to apologize
for your existence.
You don’t have to give up your place
because someone else seems
more worthy than you.
No one is more worthy than you.
You were born,
you are here in all your glory
and you have earned
a place in this world.
Stop feeling like you don’t belong
unless you are perfect.
Just enjoy being.
Not being the best.
Enjoy doing your thing, whatever it is,
whatever way you do it.
Because life isn’t a competition.
You have the right to appreciate
your own ability
To appreciate who you are.
You have the right
To lift the small weights,
to run slow, to wear faded clothes,
to speak with an accent, to be homeless
to be depressed, to be flawed,
to be unconventional.
To not be the best.
Do what you love. Exist independently.
Live. Experience. Feel.
Be better than you were yesterday.
But please don’t feel pressured to be
better than anyone else.
To be the best. The best doesn’t exist.
Only your best exists.
If you must be something – be that.
